Hongyuan "Saturn No.2" Electrodeless Induction Lamp

Shanghai Hongyuan is the second company in China to have commenced manufacture of an electrodeless induction lamp. The first to enter the field was Hong Kong based Tungda with its product based on Philips' QL system. Hongyuan meanwhile has decided to go down the route of the higher efficacy design that is possible with a tubular closed loop lamp, along the lines of the Endura/Icetron lamp.

The company was founded in 1998 by Weide Li, a graduate of China's famous Department of Light Sources at Fudan University, where he excelled in the design of electronic ballasts for fluorescent lamps. His skill in this field has led to his company's development of two new integrated circuit devices HY4501 and HY4502 made by a sister company, which allow the operating frequency of this type of electrodeless lamp to be reduced without loss of efficiency, also minimising problems of electromagnetic interference. Built-in voltage regulation allows the lamp to function on 70V-364V AC/DC supplies.

This early production sample consists of a circular discharge vessel, the electric current being inductively coupled via a pair of ferrite transformer coils. The drive current is 150kHz, making it the lowest frequency induction lamp on the market. Although this sample is not adequately screened to comply with EMC regulations, later production samples appear to produce much less interference than any other induction lamp. The electronics for the HF power supply are housed in a cylindrical body above the lamp, and equipped with a screw base enabling it to retrofit incandescent lamps. A clever vented design keeps the electronics cool thus the life claim of 30,000 hours is expected to be easily achieved.
